Employers - Do they care about your credentials? Or only your portfolio & history?

Do game design/film companies care about whether or not you went to college and obtained a degree in 3D modeling & animation? Or do they only really care about your portfolio and where you've worked before?

Currently I'm on the fence in deciding whether I should take the 2 year course in 3D Modeling & Animation for Game Design at my local Digital Art school for $37,000 CND. I come from a very poor family so this is a lot of money, and if the degree I would obtain from it isn't all that important, then would merely putting money toward good hardware/software and downloadable tutorials be a better choice?

I feel I'd be able to teach myself pretty well, and currently am already doing so. So I don't know what to do. I'd like to hear from as many people as possible about your experiences with getting hired, and what you think about this.

Much thanks.

From what I have seen with multiple job listings they all want at least a 4 year degree in a related field. If you don't have one they expect you to have a long track record of games to show. It is good to have a balance of both as having a higher degree shows you're dedicated to learning and improvement. I would say a degree does improve your odds against someone else with just a portfolio.

Computer Science appears to be a VERY popular degree for the field. You should be careful with schools offering "game design" degrees as they often misuse it as a broad term to cover all aspects from animation to programming and not the actual core field of game design. So be careful when applying to some schools, find out more about what the degree entails.

This is just my personal opinion though and I am sure someone with more experience will be able to add a whole lot more information. A degree is never a bad thing to have on a resume that much i am certain of
