GameDesignBook

For Readers of David Perry's Game Design Book

Bought the book this past week, which brought me here to notice the existence of the DP Challenge, what a great way to really understand what works in a game and how to make a game fire on all cylinders. The one problem I've come across, however, is that registration on the Wiki seems to be down and/or non-existent, making it a bit hard to add my name to the pot. Regardless, however, I look forward to starting this undertaking with or without the Wiki's blessing ;)

Edit: My progress will instead by tracked on my website.

One way to keep track of progress, if you have a blog, is to post your game reviews a blog posts under a particular tag, or category, like DPChallenge. Could even use a naming scheme like DPC# Game for them. I think I might do it that way, though I think I need to play more games, but that requires time and money.

Though, I do have one question for David on this, can we do this for non-digital games and still get credit for it as a game? I ask because there is a lot to learn from boardgames and tabletop games, and it is more game design.

For super special bonus cookie points try doing an audio section. It was the one thing I thought was lacking in the challenge. You can learn a lot about a game from its audio or lack of. It can really toy with a person's state of being and stress levels a lot more than anything else. I think a good example of this for me was The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time. Whenever you go out into Hyrule Fields at night the music suddenly cuts out and the ground opens up as the relentless dead pour out. I often found myself running around trying to avoid them but whenever they start to come for you, the typical enemy music starts to softly play in the background and that really got me paranoid. It was interesting to see how I had been so conditioned by the music to become extremely paranoid in the game. It gave me a good laugh.

Thanks for the info! I've set up a site to track my progress here.

Yes the Wiki got out of control it was getting hacked so much. I'm still accepting the challenge entries however, I just wrote a letter of recommendation to another winner in the last few days. So if you finish it, then we will start a thread here so people can see how much you rock. Seriously there's been hundreds of people start it, but very few finish. It really sorts out the people that can finish what they start, no matter how tough the going gets.

Having recently finished the DP challenge I can tell you that the website unfortuantely has been done for quite a while. This was explained to me as being because of people with nothing better to do harassing the website and other general spam bots. As far as I know, DP is still accepting the challenge you just have to find another creative way to upload it. I created a small free website and pasted all my work on there. Its been about a month and I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet, but I know DPs a very busy and important guy. Hopefully I'll hear back from him soon on it. That aside the challenge itself is definitely rewarding but far from easy. Good luck with the challenge. I wish I would have had this book when I started the project. I think some of the insights I gained from doing the challenge alone would have become more apparent to me much earlier on.
